What is Fair Trade Translation?
Fair Trade Translation is an online platform that enables and promotes the implementation of Fair Trade principles in the Language Services market. Fair Trade Translation is helping translators and project managers analyze and optimize translation jobs they contemplate taking. Via Fair Trade Translation, translators and project managers can determine the level of redundancy in the documents in a translation job; their domains and translation difficulty level; the terms a translator should know how to translate in order to do a good job and the fit to one’s skills and domain expertise; the degree to which machine translation can be used to create additional margins/savings or the degree to which machine translation is likely to lead to shadow, unpaid work; the personalized, fair price for a translation job and the time required to complete the job.
Who is Fair Trade Translation for and why should I use it?
Fair Trade Translation is for translators, project managers, and language service organizations interested in maximizing the total income they receive over time.
How does Fair Trade Translation help me increase the compensation I receive for the time I work?
Imagine that you contemplate doing a translation job. How difficult is the translation job? Does it fit your domain expertise?
Should you use machine translation or not? What engine should you use? Will you be able to translate more by post-editing a machine translated version of the job?
Fair Trade Translation addresses directly these questions. For every source language segment in your translation job,
it determines whether it can produce an automatic translation that is at least as good as a high-fuzzy match by cobbling together and/or selecting an MT engine output
from those produced by the best translation engines on the market.
If it can, it passes the resulting, high-fuzzy-like quality translations on to you, while making explicit the extra money you can pocket by post-editing these translations
instead of translating the corresponding source sentences from scratch. With Fair Trade Translation, you don’t waste any time assessing Machine Translation quality segment by segment.
Within the time you choose to work, you translate more words and are paid more.
Besides helping you exploit machine translation segments of high quality, Fair Trade Translation helps you analyze the difficulty of the jobs you contemplate taking and supports you in finding translations for the terminology required to do a good job.
How does Fair Trade Translation help me estimate and manage the commercial risk associated with a post-editing job?
Imagine that you contemplate taking a post-editing job. Are the automatic translations that come with the job sufficiently good to justify you working for a lower, post-editing price? Are you going to make or lose money on the job? Fair Trade Translation processes your post-editing job and returns to you only the segments that are translated as well as a high-fuzzy match, while making explicit the fair price you should negotiate in order to do the job. The machine translation outputs of low quality are filtered out. Fair Trade Translation empowers you to choose jobs that maximize the return you make on your investment of time and negotiate better commercial terms with your clients.
What is the difference between Fair Trade Translation and other online, machine translation services (Google Translate, Bing Translator, SDL Language Cloud, Systran, etc.)?
Online machine translation services produce automatic translations for every segment given as input. Sometimes, these outputs are of high quality; sometimes they are of low quality. Fair Trade Translation returns only automatically produced outputs of high quality, which enable you to increase your productivity and maximize the compensation you can generate in a given amount of time. In addition, it helps you estimate the fair trade price of jobs you contemplate taking and time required to complete a job. (Once you open an account, you can customize Fair Trade Translation to also return automatic translations of poor quality and to label them as such.) Fair Trade Translation also enables you to analyze translation jobs and determine their fit to your domain expertise.
Different translators use different per word translation/post-editing prices. How does Fair Trade Translation deal with this?
The price estimates computed by Fair Trade Translation are customized to the per-word prices practiced by each individual translator. The per word translation/post-editing prices can be provided explicitly, as part of the input for each job estimate; or stored in a user's profile and re-used implicitly.
Translators have different tolerance and ability levels when working with machine translation. Will Fair Trade Translation work for me?
Fair Trade Translation uses state-of-the-art machine learning technology to predict un-biased, prototypical translation quality estimates. If these predictions are not right for you, you can choose to personalize the behavior of the predictors by re-submitting to Fair Trade Translation jobs you have completed. Each time you to do so, Fair Trade Translation adjusts the behavior of the translation quality predictors so that they reflect intimately the manner in which YOU work. Over time, Fair Trade Translation learns to behave in a manner that maximizes the compensation you generate while minimizing the commercial risks associated with your daily routine.
How do I know that the modified translation job I received from Fair Trade Translation is compliant with my tools?
We recommend that you immediately upload the modified translation job that Fair Trade Translation produces into your translation environment (or export it into the original format to ensure everything works smoothly). Please report any difficulties/bugs to email@example.com.
Which bilingual segments are translated by FTT?
Only segments that are NOT locked and that translators should translate. These have the state: "new", "draft", "needs-translation" and "not translated". "Your Fair Translation Price" and "FTT Created Value" are calculated using only these segments. If you think we should process bilingual files differently, please let us know.
What file formats does FTT support?
We currently support translation jobs submitted in one of the following formats: XLIFF (.xliff, .xlf), SDL Studio (.sdlxliff), Microsoft Office (.docx, .pptx), and UTF-8 encoded text (.txt). If you have translation jobs in other file formats, we recommend you using the CloudConvert service (https://cloudconvert.com/).
Are there any additional limitations?
Our filters cannot handle bilingual documents yet.
How can I fool Fair Trade Translation?
Seriously. How can I fool it?
Seriously: in many ways. For example, if you choose to submit a file with human translations, we will reject some as being not good enough --- translations produced by machines and humans are different, after all. So far, we focused on developing the prediction software to help translators who have a genuine need. We did not focus at all on handling corner cases designed to stumble the technology. (Once you open an account, you can customize Fair Trade Translation to also return automatic translations of poor quality and to label them as such.)
What are you doing with my data? Is it safe to use Fair Trade Translation?
We are sending your source language segments to Google Translate, Bing Translator, and SDL Language Cloud. If your customer prevents you from using these engines, then you should not use Fair Trade Translation. We use all the other data solely for optimizing the platform capabilities so we can serve better your needs. We do not share any of your personal or translation data (except the source language segments you translate) with anyone else. That would not be fair, would it?
How much does it cost to use Fair Trade Translation?
Freelance professional translators can access the Fair Trade Translation services for free.
When was Fair Trade Translation founded?
Fair Trade Translation is a platform developed by Symbyonics, LLC, a Los Angeles company that was founded in November 2014. The mission of Symbyonics is to develop technology that facilitates the implementation of FairTrade principles at the boundary between humans and machines; and to bring this technology to market while applying FairTrade-inspired business practices.
